The 28-year-old’s future has been a relentless source of speculation in recent months after both he and Mesut Ozil entered into the final 12 months of their contracts at The Emirates.
Sanchez was heavily linked with a move to Manchester City in the summer transfer window but a move failed to materialise for the Chile international before the deadline at the end of August.
The attacker has now been reintegrated into the Arsenal team and is set to come up against Manchester City in the Premier League clash at The Etihad on Sunday afternoon.
There will inevitably be plenty of fresh speculation about Sanchez’s future at Arsenal in the coming weeks as the January transfer window edges closer.
However, Wenger has insisted that Sanchez was not close to a move to Manchester City in the summer and says that he doesn’t know if the attacker will stay at the club beyond January.
Speaking at a news conference ahead of Sunday’s game, Wenger said: “No [Sanchez was not close to leaving Arsenal in the summer].
“At the end of the day, close or not close, it does not matter. It doesn’t have any influence. What is important is when you have an opportunity to play at the top level, you give your best – and that’s what he will do.”
Asked what his stance is if Manchester City try to buy Sanches again in January, Wenger added: “I don’t know. Honestly, I don’t know. I am part of ‘everybody’ and I don’t think that.”
Arsenal head into the game on Sunday knowing that a win would close the gap to the leaders down to six points.
