Jamie Redknapp has expressed his concerns about Granit Xhaka in the Arsenal side ahead of Sunday’s crunch clash with Manchester City.

The Gunners are preparing to take on the Premier League leaders at The Emirates as they look to try and get themselves back into the title race.

Arsene Wenger’s men are currently nine points behind Pep Guardiola’s leaders and know that victory at The Etihad on Sunday would at least allow them to close that gap down to six points ahead of the final international break of the year.

Xhaka has a mixed reputation amongst Arsenal fans after struggling in midfield for the Gunners on a number of occasions since his transfer from Basel last year.

And former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp has not at all been convinced by Xhaka’s performances in midfield heading into Sunday’s crunch clash at The Etihad.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Redknapp said: “Granit Xhaka still struggles with the pace of the Premier League, and the problem for Arsenal is that even if they do shut down Kevin De Bruyne, they still have to worry about David Silva.

“Usually a team can only afford to have one playmaker in the team, but those two work so hard.”

Arsenal head into the game fresh from having booked their place in the last 32 of the Europa League thanks to their goalless draw with Red Star Belgrade on Thursday night.

The Gunners are aiming to win the Premier League this season for the first time since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 campaign.
