Charlie Nicholas admits he is quietly confident Arsenal can secure a top-four finish this season.

The Gunners endured a tough start to the Premier League after back-to-back losses at Stoke City and Liverpool in their opening three games.

The north London outfit lost 4-0 to Jurgen Klopp’s side at Anfield to raise serious questions about their top-four credentials this term.

However, Arsenal have managed to bounce back with five successive home victories at the Emirates Stadium following wins against West Brom, Swansea, Leicester City, Bournemouth and Brighton.

The Gunners secured a credible point in a goalless draw with defending champions Chelsea before recording their first away win of the campaign in a 5-2 victory at Everton last month.

Arsenal are nine points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City but are level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea after 10 games.

Former Gunners midfielder Nicholas is confident Arsenal are in a good position to secure fourth spot and a return to the Champions League.

“Am I satisfied? No, not completely. Are they where I thought they’d be? Yes,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.

“What has pleased me is the response since Anfield, what they did against Chelsea and the character and determination shown in the comebacks they’ve produced.

“To make the Champions League you need to be averaging two points per game and Arsenal are just under that, so all-in-all I’m fairly content since the Anfield embarrassment.”

Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season to miss out on a place in the Champions League.

The Gunners haven’t won the Premier League title since 2003-04.

The north London side won the FA Cup for the third time in four season back in May.
