Arsene Wenger told Jack Wilshere playing out-of-position at Arsenal
England boss Gareth Southgate tells Arsene Wenger to play Jack Wilshere in a number 10 role for Arsenal
Gareth Southgate has told Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger that Jack Wilshere’s best position is as a number 10.
The England international has returned from a broken leg to make a solid start to the season at the north London club despite finding his first-team opportunities somewhat limited.
Wilshere spent the 2016-17 season on loan at Bournemouth and the English midfielder made two assists in 25 appearances in the Premier League for Eddie Howe’s men.
The 25-year-old returned to the Arsenal set-up in the summer with a point to prove as he looks to earn himself a new Gunners deal with 12 months remaining on his current contract.
Wilshere has impressed in the Europa League to help Arsenal make an unbeaten start to their first campaign in Europe’s second tier competition with three victories and one stalemate.
The Gunners number 10 has made six appearances in all competitions with a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for next summer’s World Cup up for grabs.
England boss Southgate explained why he considers Wilshere’s best role to be a No10.
“Jack played as a number 10 all of last season on loan at Bournemouth,” Southgate told his pre-match media conference.
“That is not the way we are playing. When we have played with a 10, we have had Dele [Alli] and [Adam] Lallana. But we are not playing with a 10 tomorrow [against Germany on Friday].
“I don’t think Jack is a 10. I think he is a deeper player, but he is not playing deeper. You’d have to ask Arsene [Wenger] why that was.”
Wilshere has made one assist in two substitute appearances in the Premier League but there is an increasing clamour for the Englishman to start ahead of want-away Mesut Ozil.
