Martin Keown: Arsenal slapped Tottenham in the face
The Arsenal legend praises Arsene Wenger's players for a committed response in the north London derby
Martin Keown praised the Arsenal team for responding in style in the north London derby last weekend.
The Gunners were heavily criticised following a 3-1 loss to Premier League leaders Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in their final games before the international break.
Arsenal’s defeat at the Citizens was their fourth on the road this term following losses to Stoke City, Liverpool and Watford to leave the Gunners with four points from four games.
However, Arsene Wenger’s side responded with a committed performance in the derby clash thanks to goals from Shkodran Mustafi and Alexis Sanchez at the Emirates Stadium last Saturday.
Ozil produced his best performance of the season to help Arsenal quash talk of a power shift in north London.
Tottenham are two points in front of Arsenal ahead of the Gunners’ trip to Burnley on Sunday.
Former Arsenal defender Keown praised Wenger’s players for silencing their critics and responding to talk of Tottenham surpassing their north London rivals.
“Arsenal players were reading constantly about the local team, about how Tottenham supposedly had it all and everything is magic about them,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“They got a slap in the face and responded. Arsenal are a very good bunch of players and they responded in the right way.”
Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League last term to miss out on a spot in the Champions League.
The Gunners have won the FA Cup in three of the past four seasons.
