Martin Keown replies when asked whether Arsenal star would be good Barcelona signing
The Arsenal legend believes Mesut Ozil would be a decent addition to the Barcelona team
Martin Keown believes Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil would be a decent signing for Barcelona.
The German midfielder is facing an uncertain future at the north London side after entering the final 12 months of his current Arsenal deal.
Ozil is set to be available on a free transfer next summer unless Arsenal decide to cash in on the World Cup winner in January.
The 29-year-old playmaker produced a mesmerizing performance in Arsenal’s 2-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby.
Ozil has been linked with a potential switch to Manchester United having worked with Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid.
According to reports, Barcelona and Real Madrid would be two destinations of interest to Ozil.
Asked whether the Arsenal number 11 would be a good addition to the Barcelona team given the array of talents already at the La Liga leaders, former Gunners defender Keown told the Daily Mail:
“I don’t think he would be a bad signing. Everyone knows his calibre. Look at who he would be assisting – Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez… they are not going to turn him down because they know his vision.
“But the next step for him was to become a Messi or a Ronaldo type player – more ruthless. Going to a situation like that at Barcelona admits he is a provider rather than someone who can be a No 1.
“Most of the time he looks like he is playing for fun. When he’s happy, he plays well. But when he’s not happy, he doesn’t.”
Ozil moved to Arsenal in a £42.5m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid in the 2013 summer transfer window.
The German midfielder has won three FA Cup crown in four seasons but hasn’t been able to propel Arsenal to a title triumph.
Arsenal are in fifth place in the Premier League table after 12 games.
