Rio Ferdinand names biggest frustration with Arsenal and Mesut Ozil
The Manchester United legend wants Mesut Ozil and Arsenal to produce their dominant performances on a more regular basis
Rio Ferdinand has warned Mesut Ozil and his Arsenal team-mates that they can’t afford to be selective when it comes to turning it on in big games.
The Gunners welcomed their north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur to the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon looking to overturn a four-point deficit.
Arsenal suffered a resounding 4-0 loss to top-six rivals Liverpool at Anfield back in August as Arsene Wenger’s side looked in disarray on Merseyside.
The FA Cup holders lost 3-1 to Premier League leaders Manchester City in their last game before the international break to leave them 12 points adrift of the pacesetters.
However, Wenger’s men showed some fighting spirit with a near perfect performance in a 2-0 win against fourth-placed Tottenham in Saturday’s north London derby.
Ozil epitomised Arsenal’s commitment and desire at The Emirates as the Germany international silenced his critics with a man of the match performance.
But Manchester United legend Ferdinand warned the World Cup winner and his Arsenal pals that it’s not good enough to produce those dominant performance just three or four times a season.
“I think the biggest frustration for Arsenal fans is the Arsenal team,” Ferdinand told Premier League Tonight on BT Sport.
“This isn’t about Mesut Ozil, it’s about the whole team. The way they played against Tottenham with the intensity and the pressing… You watch them play 10 games, you’ll probably get that three or four times out of them and the other five or six, it’s not the same.
“At the top level, when the margins are so small between winning and losing, you can’t afford to take your foot off the gas. You’ve got to be on it all the time – you can’t pick and choose.”
Arsenal finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last term to miss out on a Champions League spot.
