Jermaine Jenas: Arsenal star still world class when he’s switched on
The former Spurs midfielder believes Mesut Ozil is still capable of world-class performance when the Arsenal star is feeling motivated
Mesut Ozil is still a world-class footballer when the Arsenal midfielder is feeling motivated to perform at his full potential, Jermaine Jenas has claimed.
The Germany international remains a controversial figure in the Gunners squad due to his refusal to sign a new contract with the north London club.
Indeed, Ozil’s current deal is set to expire at the end of the 2017-18 campaign to throw up the possibility of the World Cup winner leaving for nothing next summer.
The 29-year-old has been linked with a move to Manchester United having worked with Jose Mourinho during his three-season spell at Real Madrid.
However, Ozil’s contract situation coupled with his poor Arsenal performances in heavy losses at Liverpool and Manchester City have prompted criticism of the German playmaker.
But the Arsenal No11 produced a brilliant performance in a 2-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby at the Emirates Stadium.
The ex-Real Madrid midfielder created Shkodran Mustafi’s opening goal with a powerful header past Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
Speaking to Premier League Tonight on BT Sport, former Tottenham midfielder Jenas lavished praise on Arsenal playmaker Ozil.
“When Mesut Ozil is on it, he is one of the best and he is world class,” Jenas said. “He was sensational against Tottenham. He was actually unplayable. They didn’t know how to deal with him.”
Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season to miss out on a Champions League spot.
