Paul Merson: What Arsenal need to rival Man City
The Arsenal legend explains what the Gunners need to improve under Arsene Wenger
Paul Merson believes Arsenal need to find greater consistency if Arsene Wenger wants to challenge Manchester City.
The Gunners welcomed Tottenham Hotspur to the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening looking to bounce back from a 3-1 loss to the Premier League leaders before the international break.
Arsenal produced an emphatic performance in a 2-0 win over Spurs thanks to goals from Shkodran Mustafi and Alexis Sanchez in the first half at The Emirates.
Wenger’s side have an 100 per cent record in their home games in the Premier League this season thanks to victories over Leicester City, Bournemouth, West Brom, Brighton and Swansea City.
However, the Gunners have struggled badly on the road in the Premier League following losses at Stoke City, Liverpool, Watford and Manchester City.
Indeed, Arsenal have only collected four points from their six away games in the Premier League to leave Wenger’s side in sixth place in the table.
Former Gunners midfielder Merson warned the Arsenal boss that his team need to improve their consistency if the north London side are to challenge for silverware.
“Arsenal need consistency. We’ll watch Arsenal in the next 20-odd games and in eight of them they’ll be mind-blowing,” Merson told The Debate on Sky Sports.
“Arsenal are up there with Man City on their day. But they don’t do it all the time – and that’s the problem.
“Arsenal fans are paying top dollar for their season tickets, put top dollar players on the pitch.”
Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season to miss out on a Champions League spot.
