Arsene Wenger has hinted that Mathieu Debuchy’s future could lie in central defence after the Frenchman’s reintegration back into the first team at Arsenal.

The right-back made his first two appearances of the season for the north London side in recent weeks after playing against Red Star Belgrade in the Europa League and against Norwich City in the League Cup last week.

Debuchy has struggled with injury since his move to Arsenal and lost his place at right-back to Hector Bellerin at The Emirates.

However, Wenger has now hinted that he could be preparing to play the Frenchman in a central midfield role this season as he looks to find a new position for Debuchy.

Wenger is quoted as saying by the Evening Standard: “Maybe his future is as a centre-back.

“He has the attributes because, despite his size, he’s very good in the air.

“You think he couldn’t play centre back because he’s not tall, but if you look at the number of balls he wins in the air, it’s impressive.”

Debuchy will be hoping to feature for Arsenal when the Gunners return to Europa League action on Thursday night with a home clash against Red Star Belgrade.

The north London side are currently in fifth place in the Premier League after 10 games as they prepare for their trip to Manchester City in the top flight on Sunday afternoon.

The Gunners finished fifth but won the FA Cup for the third time in four years last season.
