Guillem Balague replies when asked if Mesut Ozil is leaving Arsenal for Barcelona
Guillem Balague plays down suggestions that Barcelona could sign Mesut Ozil from Arsenal next year
Guillem Balague has played down talk of Mesut Ozil signing for Barcelona from Arsenal next year.
The 29-year-old midfielder’s future has been a relentless source of speculation in recent months after both he and Alexis Sanchez entered into the final 12 months of their contracts at The Emirates.
As things stand, Arsenal could be set to lose Ozil on a free transfer next summer, unless they decide to sell him in the January transfer window.
Reports in the media in recent days have suggested that Barcelona could be interested in luring the German World Cup winner to Camp Nou.
However, Spanish football expert Balague has moved to play down talk of a move to the Spanish club for Ozil as he branded the speculation as “media talk”.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Balague said: “Barcelona had the possibility of signing Ozil last summer – he was offered to them – but he decided against it as they thought they didn’t need him.
“Of course, there was such an expenditure on Ousmane Dembele that they didn’t think Ozil was the proper player they wanted.
“The same situation has happened here, he has been offered to them but my understanding is that he is not the kind of player they are looking for.
“It’s more media talk than anything else.”
Ozil and his Arsenal team-mates are currently preparing for their Premier League clash against Burnley at Turf Moor on Sunday afternoon.
The Germany playmaker was named as the man of the match as Arsenal won the north London derby with a 2-0 victory over Tottenham at The Emirates last weekend.
However, Arsene Wenger’s men still remain 12 points behind leaders Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title.
