Paul Merson: Arsenal star is unbelievable, a different class
Paul Merson opens up about Mesut Ozil ahead of Arsenal's trip to Burnley on Sunday
Paul Merson has admitted that Mesut Ozil was in “unbelievable” form for Arsenal against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.
The Germany international was named as the man of the match as Arsene Wenger’s men claimed all three points against their bitter local rivals with a 2-0 victory at The Emirates.
Ozil set up the first goal for Shkodran Mustafi and was in solid form throughout in a day to remember for Arsenal fans.
The 29-year-old midfielder has been regularly criticised for his failure to produce consistent performances for Arsenal over the years.
And former Gunners star Merson says that Ozil only gets so much stick because he is such a talented player.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Merson said: “Against Spurs he was unbelievable. Different class.
“He’s a Rolls Royce player, and that’s why we all get the hump. You know that on his day he is one of the best players in the Premier League. That’s why he gets so much stick.
“A player from other mid-table teams won’t get stick for underperforming because they’re not world class players. But Ozil can be a world class player.
“This is a World Cup winner, a player that strolls into Germany’s team, who are one of the favourites to win the World Cup.
“I’d go as far as saying he’s one of the first names on the team sheet for Germany. How can he not turn up and be eight out of 10 in the Premier League every week?”
Arsenal are aiming to follow up their victory over Tottenham with another win against Burnley in the top flight at Turf Moor on Sunday.
The Gunners head into this weekend’s round of fixtures in sixth place in the table and 12 points behind leaders Manchester City as they look to try and claw their way back into the title race before the season is out.
Arsenal have not won the Premier League title since their famous unbeaten triumph in the 2003-04 campaign.
