Wenger told to drop key duo for Arsenal v Tottenham and start 26-year-olds
Charlie Nicholas tells Arsene Wenger to play Danny Welbeck and Alexandre Lacazette ahead of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez for Arsenal against Spurs
Charlie Nicholas has told Arsene Wenger to drop Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez for Arsenal’s crunch clash with Tottenham – and start Alexandre Lacazette and Danny Welbeck instead.
The Gunners are preparing to take on their bitter local rivals at The Emirates as they look to bounce back to winning ways in the Premier League.
Arsenal were beaten 3-1 by Manchester City at The Etihad before the international break, with both Sanchez and Ozil coming in for criticism for their below-par displays against the Citizens.
Wenger was criticised for his decision not to play Lacazette from the start against Manchester City, as he came off the bench in the second half to score the Gunners’ only goal of the game.
And former Arsenal star Nicholas believes that the north London side should drop both Sanchez and Ozil for Saturday’s crunch clash.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Nicholas said: “If Arsenal are serious about winning these big games, I would go with Alexandre Lacazette and Danny Welbeck and leave Ozil out and Sanchez out.
“Are they two of our best players? Of course they are, but they don’t do enough in these big games.
“Welbeck isn’t as talented but what you’ve got to do against a back three is move them about to create chances, while Lacazette is our best finisher and sulky Sanchez doesn’t like playing out wide.”
Arsenal are aiming to climb their way back up the Premier League table, after having finished fifth in the table last term.
The north London side are currently in sixth place and 12 points behind leaders Manchester City after just 11 games of the new campaign.
Arsenal have not won the title since their famous unbeaten triumph back in 2004.
