The Germany international had travelled up north with the rest of the squad but was sent home on Sunday morning after falling ill on Saturday night.
The nature of the problem has not been fully disclosed but Wenger admits that it looks unlikely that Ozil will be fit to face Huddersfield at The Emirates.
Wenger told his post-match news conference on Sunday: “I haven’t even seen him, the doctor came to see me and said we had to travel him back today.
“He was in the hotel with us. He travelled up and travelled back and we brought Maitland-Niles, who arrived at 1pm because we were only 17 [without Mesut].
“Will he be available for Wednesday? Certainly he will be short for Wednesday.”
Should Ozil miss out, it would come as a blow to the Gunners, with the Germany international having won man of the match for his fine display in the 2-0 win over Tottenham at The Emirates earlier this month.
Arsenal’s dramatic win at Burnley on Sunday lifted Wenger’s men up into fourth place in the Premier League table as they bid to try and close the gap to leaders Manchester City.
However, Pep Guardiola’s men are the clear favourites to win the title this season, with the Citizens currently 12 points ahead of the Gunners in the table, and eight points clear of second-placed Manchester United.
