Paul Merson: Arsene Wenger can always rely on Arsenal signing
The Arsenal legend believes Alexandre Lacazette deserves to start his first north London derby on Saturday afternoon
Paul Merson believes Alexandre Lacazette warrants a place in the Arsenal side for his first north London derby on Saturday afternoon.
The Gunners made the France international their most-expensive signing after Arsenal agreed a £52m fee with Ligue 1 side Lyon back in July.
Lacazette scored within 60 seconds of his Arsenal debut in a thrilling 4-3 victory over Leicester City at the Emirates Stadium.
The France striker netted five times in Arsenal’s opening six home games but Wenger has used his summer signing sparingly on the road.
Lacazette came off the bench in losses to Stoke City and Liverpool before he scoered his first away goal in a 5-2 win at Everton last month.
Wenger was criticised for starting Lacazette from the bench last time out after the French striker came on as a substitute to score in a 3-1 loss to Premier League leaders Manchester City.
Former Gunners midfielder Merson is adamant that Lacazette should start for Arsenal against Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Naming his Arsenal-Totteham composite XI, Merson told Sky Sports:
“Up front I will go with Alexandre Lacazette. I have to get him on the pitch because he is a goalscorer and he never lets Arsenal down when he plays.”
Lacazette scored 100 goals in 201 games in his Lyon career before his club-record move to Arsenal in the summer transfer window.
The Gunners won the FA Cup in three of the past four seasons.
