Tim Sherwood has warned Arsene Wenger that Arsenal need to win the north London derby to keep their fading top-four hopes alive.

The Gunners dropped to sixth place in the Premier League table following a 3-1 loss to Premier League leaders Manchester City in their last outing.

Arsenal are already four points adrift of Chelsea in fourth place despite spending a club-record £52m fee on Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette in the summer transfer window.

Wenger’s side ended up in fifth place last term after finishing behind Liverpool to miss out on Champions League football for the first time under Wenger.

The Gunners will look to return to winning ways this weekend but face a tough assignment against Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal lost 2-0 to Tottenham in their last Premier League meeting in the north London derby following goals from Dele Alli and Harry Kane.

Former Spurs boss Sherwood warned Wenger that Arsenal are already facing a must-win game to keep their slim top-four hopes alive.

“Arsenal have to win this game,” Sherwood told The Debate on Sky Sports.

“If they want to win the Premier League this year, or be in contention, or get anywhere near the top four, they have to win this game.”

Arsenal haven’t won the Premier League title in 2003-04 as the Gunners continue to regress under one of their most-successful managers.

The Gunners also signed Bosnian defender Sead Kolasinac in the summer on a free transfer from Schalke 04.
