Mauricio Pochettino told where to play Eric Dier for Arsenal v Tottenham
Martin Keown believes Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino should use Eric Dier in a centre-half role
Martin Keown believes Eric Dier’s best position is on the right side of a three-man defence ahead of Totteham Hotspur’s trip to Arsenal.
The England international has established himself as one of the best defensive players in the Premier League over the past 24 months or so.
Dier started his Tottenham career at full-back before he was utilised in a holding midfield role under current Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.
The retired Argentina international has also used Dier in defence when Toby Alderweireld or Jan Vertonghen have been sidelined with injury.
England boss Gareth Southgate has also played Dier in a variety of positions since taking over the reigns of the national team back in 2016.
Dier will be hoping to start Tottenham’s game against bitter rivals Arsenal in the north London derby in Saturday’s early kick-off.
Former Arsenal defender Keown suggested that Dier’s best position is at centre-half and ideally on the right side of a back three.
“Dier is such an outstanding player that he can play in midfield,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“Ultimately, if England had better midfield players he would be in the back line.
“For me, Dier is England’s best central defender. I read this morning that Gareth Southgate intends to play him as a defender at the World Cup.
“While that is the right move, he needs to play on the right of a back three rather than in the middle.”
Tottenham signed Dier in a £4m transfer from Sporting Lisbon in the 2014 summer transfer window.
Spurs finished in second place in the Premier League table but ended up seven points adrift of eventual champions Chelsea.
Tottenham are eight points behind leaders Manchester City.
