Paul Merson is backing Arsenal to hold Tottenham Hotspur to a 1-1 draw at The Emirates on Saturday afternoon.

The Gunners will welcome their north London rivals in search of a sixth successive victory at home in the Premier League this term.

Arsenal suffered a 3-1 loss to Premier League leaders Manchester City in their last top-flight outing to leave Arsene Wenger’s side 12 points behind the Citizens.

Tottenham are in third place and four points ahead of Arsenal following their 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Wembley last weekend.

Spurs are unbeaten in their last four games against Arsenal in the north London derby and were 2-0 winners in their most recent meeting at White Hart Lane last term.

Former Arsenal midfielder Merson believes Arsene Wenger’s side will deny Tottenham three points in Saturday’s early kick-off at The Emirates.

“I am going to go for the draw, but that’s only in the hope! If both teams turn up, you just see Tottenham winning,” Merson told Sky Sports. “I think home advantage in a tight game, I like to go 1-1.”

He added: “For Arsenal fans, if they come away with a 1-1 draw and can stop Tottenham winning the league, I think that is how it has now got at the moment as Arsenal are not going to win the league!

“As long as the Tottenham players have had a good rest, they did not go away on international duty, which is a big advantage, so I think Arsenal will settle for a draw.”

Arsenal finished in fifth place in the Premier League table last season to miss out on a spot in the Champions League.

Tottenham, on the other hand, ended up seven points behind eventual Premier League champions Chelsea.

Spurs finished in second place and 11 points above Arsenal for the first time in their Premier League history.

Arsenal were 2-1 winners against Chelsea in the FA Cup final last term.
