Arsene Wenger told Arsenal need to improve key position
The Arsenal manager needs to sign a commanding midfielder to provide leadership, according to Darren Bent
Darren Bent believes Arsenal still lack a leader in central midfield.
The Gunners spent a club-record £52m fee on France striker Alexandre Lacazette from Ligue 1 side Lyon in the summer transfer window.
The north London side also recruited Bosnian defender Sead Kolasinac in a free transfer from Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04.
However, Kolasinac hasn’t been able to resolve Arsenal’s defensive problems despite a promising start to his Gunners career.
Arsenal have already conceded 16 times in 11 games in the Premier League following a 3-1 loss to leaders Manchester City before the international break.
The Gunners midfielder has struggled to recover from the loss of Patrick Vieira in 2005, while Cesc Fabregas’ move to Barcelona in 2011 was another blow.
Arsenal signed Granit Xhaka in a £33m deal from Borussia Monchengladbach in the 2016 summer transfer window but the Switzerland international has struggled with discipline and inconsistency.
Former Tottenham striker Bent believes Arsenal need to sign a player in the mould of Emmanuel Petit or Vieira to provide some leadership in the middle of the park.
“When you look at the Arsenal Invincibles the team now, you wonder where is the backbone or their leaders,” Bent told The Debate on Sky Sports on Thursday night.
“It’s the one thing Arsenal really miss. A leader or character in the middle of the park.”
Arsenal have won the FA Cup three times in the past four seasons but haven’t come close to winning the Premier League title since 2004.
The Gunners finished in fifth place last term.
