Rio Ferdinand criticised Manchester United for a wasteful performance after Jose Mourinho’s side failed to secure their place in the Champions League last 16 following a 1-0 loss at Basel.

Manchester United travelled to Switzerland in the knowledge that a point would be sufficient to secure their place in the Champions League knockout phase.

The Red Devils were the superior team in the first half but the visitors couldn’t make the breakthrough.

Birthday boy Marouane Fellaini, 30, came closest to making the breakthrough when he hit the woodwork after an excellent cross from Anthony Martial.

Romelu Lukaku endured a quiet night but he almost risked the wrath of his manager when he lost possession and Luca Zuffi fired narrowly wide.

Argentina international Marcos Rojo made his first appearance since recovering from a knee problem and he produced a great recovery tackle to deny Dimitri Oberlin, who only had Sergio Romero to beat.

And Manchester United were left to rue a wasteful performance in the first half after failing to heed Basel’s warning shots when Michael Lang scored a winner in the final minute of normal time.

Mourinho brought on Nemanja Matic for Pogba to sure up his midfield before supplementing his attack with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcus Rashford but the duo couldn’t find a winner.

Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand criticised the Red Devils for their poor performance in front of goal.

“When you’re up in a game and you’re getting opportunities like Man United did in the first half, you have to take your chances,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.

“At this level, you get punished. Basel rode the storm, came back in the second half and showed great character.

“Man United will be bitterly disappointed because it was an opportunity to rest players in the last game. Now, they’ve got to keep playing.”

Manchester United missed out on their 13th clean sheet of the season following their last-gasp 1-0 loss to Basel on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils are looking to win the Champions League for the first time since 2008 when Manchester United beat Chelsea on penalties.

Manchester United were 2-0 winners against Dutch giants Ajax in the Europa League final last term.
