Michael Owen states his prediction for Basel v Man United
The former Man United striker is backing Jose Mourinho's side to beat Swiss side Basel in Switzerland on Wednesday night
Michael Owen is backing Manchester United to maintain their perfect record in the Champions League thanks to a win at Basel on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils were 3-0 winners against the Swiss side in their opening group-stage fixture before a 4-1 win at Russian side CSKA Moscow.
Manchester United eased to narrow 1-0 victory over Benfica in Lisbon before Jose Mourinho edged to an unconvincing 2-0 win in the return fixture.
Mourinho’s require one more point to book their place in the Champions League knockout phase ahead of the visit of Swiss giants Basel.
The Red Devils bounced back from a 1-0 win at Chelsea in the Premier League last weekend after Manchester United secured a 4-1 victory over Newcastle United.
The 20-time English champions haven’t won the Champions League since 2008 when Sir Alex Ferguson’s side beat Chelsea on penalties in Moscow.
Former Manchester United striker Owen is tipping the Red Devils to ease to victory at Basel on Wednesday night to maintain their 100 per cent record.
Owen told BetVictor: “United are not yet mathematically confirmed in the last 16 of the competition despite a 100% record in the Group stages to date, but they can cement their place against a Swiss side who have only won one of their last seven home games in the Champions League.”
“No English side have kept a clean sheet in European competition in 13 previous games in Basel and it is possible that United will concede – but I still think Jose Mourinho’s side will return home with their perfect record in the group still intact.”
Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League table but eight points behind current leaders Manchester City.
The Red Devils won the Europa League last term thanks to a 2-0 victory over Dutch giants Ajax in the final.
