Steven Gerrard has played down Chelsea’s chances of winning the Champions League this season.

The defending Premier League champions booked their place in the last 16 of Europe’s top competition with a 4-0 win over Qarabag in Azerbaijan on Wednesday night.

Chelsea eased to commanding win thanks to penalties from Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas, while Willian netted either side of half-time to secure three points.

The Blues qualified for the knockout phase thanks to their triumph in Azerbaijan despite a humbling 3-0 loss to Serie A giants AS Roma last time out.

Chelsea were impressive 2-1 winners at Atletico Madrid earlier in the group stage but were unable to beat AS Roma after a 3-3 draw at Stamford Bridge last month.

Asked about Chelsea’s chances of winning the competition for the first time since 2012, former Liverpool captain Gerrard told BT Sport:

“They wouldn’t be my pick but they are capable. They’ve got world-class players and a good manager.

“I think they’ve got a big enough squad, but they need to keep their important players fit. That’s the key for Chelsea.

“I fancy PSG this year.”

Chelsea won the Champions League for the first time in 2012 after a penalty shootout victory over Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena.

Gerrard was part of the Liverpool team that beat Chelsea in Champions League semi-finals in 2005 and 2007.

The Blues lost on penalties to their domestic rivals Manchester United in the Champions League final in Moscow in 2008.
