Steven Gerrard accuses Chelsea star of being ‘passive and laboured’ against Liverpool FC
Steven Gerrard was clearly not impressed by Tiemoue Bakayoko's performance for Chelsea at Liverpool FC
Steven Gerrard has criticised Tiemoue Bakayoko for his “passive” and “laboured” performance for Chelsea at Liverpool FC on Saturday evening.
The French midfielder seemed to struggle to get into the game at Anfield as he was deployed alongside both Danny Drinkwater and N’Golo Kante.
Bakayoko lasted for 77 minutes before being substituted by Antonio Conte, as Willian came off the bench to net a dramatic equaliser to cancel out Mohamed Salah’s opener in the 85th minute.
The midfielder signed for Chelsea from Monaco in the summer transfer window but it would seem as if he still has some work to do to get used to the rigours of English football.
And Liverpool FC legend Gerrard admitted that he was not at all impressed by Bakayoko’s performance for Chelsea at Anfield on Saturday night.
Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Gerrard said: “I thought he was very passive today and very laboured as well.
“I don’t think he’s found his feet in this Chelsea team yet.
“I don’t think he plays to his strengths. His strengths are his height, his power, his profile and his presence – but he doesn’t show that.
“I think he’s caught in the middle of what type of midfielder he is. Whether he’s a defensive or attacking one, I can’t really work him out.”
Bakayoko will be hoping to win over Chelsea fans if given the chance to impress in the Blues’ Premier League clash with Swansea City at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.
Saturday’s draw left Conte’s men in third place in the Premier League table and 11 points behind leaders Manchester City as they look to try and defend their title this season.
