Matt Le Tissier believes Jose Mourinho could opt to adopt an attacking approach for Manchester United’s clash against Chelsea to avoid losing more ground on Premier League leaders Manchester City.

The Red Devils have been criticised for a series of subdued performances over the past few weeks to leave Manchester United five points adrift of Pep Guardiola’s side.

The 20-time English champions settled for a goalless draw with Liverpool at Anfield in a dour performance at their bitter rivals before losing 2-1 promoted side Huddersfield Town.

Manchester United managed to snatch three points in the final nine minutes at Old Trafford last weekend after Anthony Martial came off the bench to score a late winner in a 1-0 victory over title rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Chelsea were 4-0 winners against Manchester United in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge last season.

Former Southampton midfielder Le Tissier believes Manchester United could open up and produce a more attacking display at defending champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

“The only reason he would change is if he is looking at the gap between them and Man City, he might not be sure Man City will come back to them,” Le Tissier told The Debate on Sky Sports.

“Then he has to make sure he picks up three points every game, not picking up three points against the smaller teams and picking up a point against the bigger teams.”

Manchester United are looking to win their first Premier League title since 2013.

The Red Devils signed Benfica defender Victor Lindelof, Everton striker Romelu Lukaku and Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic.
