Antonio Conte admits that he is getting concerned about Thibaut Courtois' situation at Chelsea
Antonio Conte has admitted that he is concerned that Thibaut Courtois could run down his contract at Chelsea and leave the club on a free transfer.
The Belgian shot-stopper has established himself as one of the world’s top goalkeepers at Chelsea in recent years since returning from his loan spells at Atletico Madrid.
Courtois is widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s top shot-stoppers along with David De Gea and Hugo Lloris, and the west London club are likely to be keen to want to tie him down to a new long-term contract.
The goalkeeper’s current contract is set to expire at the end of next season and there has not been any public progress in talks about a new deal with Chelsea.
Arsenal find themselves in the difficult situation of possibly losing two of their key players – Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil – and the end of the season, after the pair both failed to sign new contracts at The Emirates.
And Conte admits that he is keen to avoid a similar situation with Courtois as the the goalkeeper heads towards the end of his contract at Stamford Bridge.
Conte is quoted as saying by Metro: “As you know very well, if a big player decides to not sign a new contract it is difficult for the club to face this issue.
“But at the same time there is space to deal with this type of situation and to solve it in this season.
“[Alexis] Sanchez and [Mesut] Ozil are finishing their contracts with Arsenal. These situations are not simple, but every club has to try and solve all them.”
Chelsea return to Premier League action on Wednesday afternoon when they host Swansea City at Stamford Bridge.
