Rio Ferdinand: The Chelsea midfielder who makes Alvaro Morata come alive
Rio Ferdinand talks up Cesc Fabregas' importance to Chelsea and Alvaro Morata this season
Rio Ferdinand believes that Cesc Fabregas needs to be on the pitch for Chelsea to get the best out of Alvaro Morata.
The Spanish midfielder was surprisingly dropped to the bench for Chelsea’s trip to Liverpool FC on Saturday evening after having been in fine form for the Blues so far this season.
Fabregas had struggled to break into the first team under Antonio Conte last season as Chelsea won the Premier League title in the 2016-17 campaign.
However, following the sale of Nemanja Matic to Manchester United, Fabregas has been holding down a more regular spot in the starting line-up and has been in top form this term.
The 30-year-old has earned plenty of praise for his performances this term and has scored two goals and made four assists in all competitions so far.
However, former Manchester United defender Ferdinand feels that Fabregas is also helping to bring out the best of summer signing Morata following his move to Stamford Bridge from Real Madrid.
Speaking to BT Sport, Ferdinand said: “I didn’t see Alvaro Morata in the game really [during the 1-1 draw at Liverpool on Saturday] until Cesc Fabregas came on the pitch.
“As soon as Fabregas stepped onto that pitch, you saw him [Morata] make runs in behind, coming alive to link the play up.”
Fabregas will be hoping to be restored to the starting line-up for Chelsea when the Blues take on Swansea City at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night in the Premier League.
