Rio Ferdinand: Chelsea star was an ‘absolute disgrace’ against Liverpool FC
Rio Ferdinand was not impressed by Tiemoue Bakayoko's display for Chelsea against Liverpool FC
Rio Ferdinand criticised Tiemoue Bakayoko for his below-par performance for Chelsea as the Blues sealed a 1-1 draw with Liverpool FC at Anfield in the Premier League on Saturday.
The French midfielder signed for the Blues from Monaco in the summer transfer window and has been a regular fixture in the first team for the west London club since his move to Stamford Bridge.
Bakayoko made his 10th Premier League start of the season for the Blues on Merseyside but he seemed to struggle during the game.
The midfielder was involved in the sloppy defending which led to Mohamed Salah’s opener in the 65th minute at Anfield.
Willian came off the bench to net a fortuitous equaliser for the visitors in the 85th minute at Anfield when his cross-shot beat Simon Mignolet.
But former Manchester United defender Ferdinand was clearly less than impressed by Bakayoko’s performance for the Blues, with the midfielder having been replaced by Pedro in the 77th minute at Anfield.
Speaking during BT Sport‘s coverage of the game, Ferdinand said: “If I was Gary Cahill, I’d be screaming at Tiemoue Bakayoko.
“Defensively, he’s been an absolute disgrace today. He’s doing nothing, he’s letting people run off him and leaving Cahill isolated.
“He should be telling Bakayoko to protect [the back four].
“They rolled the ball into Mo Salah every time they got on the right-hand side.”
Chelsea fans will be hoping to see Bakayoko step his game up after his disappointing evening on Saturday at Anfield.
Liverpool FC, who finished fourth last season, will return to Premier League action with a trip to Stoke City on Wednesday night.
Defending champions Chelsea, meanwhile, will get back to Premier League affairs when they host Swansea City at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.
