Gary Neville: Antonio Conte got big Chelsea decision right

The Man United legend praises Antonio Conte for the decision to drop David Luiz in favour of Andreas Christensen

Gary Neville has credited Antonio Conte with making the right call to start Andreas Christensen and leave David Luiz on the bench for Chelsea’s 1-0 win against Manchester United.

The Blues welcomed their title rivals to Stamford Bridge fresh from an embarrassing 3-0 loss to Serie A giants AS Roma in the Champions League last week.

Indeed, title holders Chelsea conceded 13 times in six games before the visit of Manchester United as Luiz continued to flounder in Conte’s inconsistent defence.

The Chelsea boss turned to 21-year-old Denmark international on Sunday evening and Christensen kept Romelu Lukaku under wraps in a 1-0 victory over the Red Devils.

Luiz wasn’t even named in the Chelsea squad as the Brazil international sat in the stands as Alvaro Morata scored a 55th-minute winner at Stamford Bridge.

Former Manchester United defender Neville believes Conte deserves praise for making the brave call to drop Luiz in favour of Christensen.

“He’ll have known that decision – Luiz is a big signing, a big character – would have brought pressure so he deserves big credit,” Neville told Sky Sports.

Neville added: “[Andreas] Christiansen came in and did very well.

“There were big question marks ahead of their game against Tottenham at Wembley – the vultures were circling around Antonio Conte – and more rumours today about Conte and David Luiz…this club can create madness out of nothing!”

Chelsea won the Premier League title last season after finishing seven points clear of their closest rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

The defending champions have only managed to win seven of their 11 games.

Chelsea are nine points behind title holders Manchester City despite their 1-0 win against Manchester United.
