Pat Nevin names 21-year-old as Chelsea’s ‘most dependable’ defender
The Chelsea legend believes Andreas Christensen has become the defending champions' best defender
Andreas Christensen has become Chelsea’s most dependable defender this season, Pat Nevin has claimed.
The Denmark international returned from a two-season loan spell at Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer.
Christensen has challenged Antonio Conte’s seasoned centre-halves for a starting spot in the Chelsea team.
The Blues manager made the controversial decision to leave out David Luiz and start Christensen for the visit of title rivals Manchester United at the weekend.
The 21-year-old managed to keep summer signing Romelu Lukaku under close wraps as Chelsea eased to a 1-0 victory over the Red Devils.
Christensen has made seven appearances in the Premier League, while the Danish starlet has also featured in three Champions League games.
Former Chelsea winger Nevin believes Christensen has eclipsed Cesar Azpilicueta, Gary Cahill, Antonio Rudiger and Luiz as the club’s most consistent defender.
“He is time at Gladbach really helped him,” Nevin told Newstalk.
“He had some Champions League games there. He looked quite good in Germany. I’ve watched him against Man United and the bits of pieces he’s played this season.
“Chelsea have Rudiger, Cahill, Luiz and Azpiliecueta at the back. He has been there most dependable defender. He starts now. He 100 per cent starts now.”
Chelsea finished seven points clear of their closest title rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League last season.
The Blues signed six players in the summer transfer window ahead of a return to the Champions League.
