Antonio Conte sends defiant message to Chelsea fans about catching Man City
The Chelsea boss is confident his Blues squad can still catch leaders Manchester City in the title race
Antonio Conte is adamant Chelsea can still catch runaway leaders Manchester City if the defending champions remain united.
The Blues have made a faltering start to the Premier League season to leave the title holders nine points adrift of Pep Guardiola’s unbeaten side.
Chelsea lost 3-2 to Burnley at Stamford Bridge in their season opener before Kevin De Bruyne scored Manchester City’s winner in a 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.
The defending champions started October with a 2-1 loss to the Premier League’s basement club Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
Chelsea have notched up some impressive wins with a 2-1 victory over title rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley in the second game of the 2017-18 campaign.
Conte’s men edged to a 1-0 win against second-placed Manchester United at Stamford Bridge last weekend thanks to Alvaro Morata’s 55th-minute winner.
The Blues have won the Premier League crown in two of the past three seasons to dominate the English top flight.
Conte issued a rallying cry to his Chelsea squad in the Premier League title race.
“It will be very difficult this season because Manchester City are having an impressive run and are winning games,” Conte told Sky Sports.
“I think that we have to look at ourselves and try to have this type of game with the same spirit [as against Man United] and then to try to give the best for ourselves and for our fans.”
Chelsea signed six players in the summer transfer window to improve their squad ahead of a return to the Champions League.
The Blues sold Diego Costa and Nemanja Matic despite the duo being key to the title success in 2016-17.
