Pat Nevin names Chelsea star who is to blame for poor results
The Chelsea legend pinpoints David Luiz as a weak link in the Blues defence
Pat Nevin believes David Luiz could have the root cause of Chelsea’s poor performances before last weekend’s 1-0 win against Manchester United.
The defending champions made a disappointing start to the Premier League campaign following a 3-2 loss to Burnley at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea missed out on the chance to close the deficit on Premier League leaders Manchester City after a 1-0 defeat in west London following Kevin De Bruyne’s winner against his former club.
The Blues even suffered a shock 2-1 loss to the Premier League’s basement club Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park before returning with a 4-2 win against Watford.
Chelsea had conceded 13 times in six games in all competitions ahead of the visit of title rivals Manchester United at Stamford Bridge last weekend.
Antonio Conte made the controversial decision to start 21-year-old Denmark international Andreas Christensen ahead of Luiz and the young centre-halve managed to keep Manchester United summer signing Romelu Lukaku quiet.
The Chelsea boss is rumoured to have fallen out with Luiz after leaving the South American out of his last Premier League squad.
Former Chelsea winger Nevin suggested Luiz was to blame for the west London side’s disappointing run of results in the Champions League and the Premier League.
“Something was mega wrong at Chelsea,” Nevin told Newstalk.
“The passion and the spirit wasn’t there. They were terrible against Watford.
“They conceded six goals against Roma. The game against Palace was a joke. Kante comes back and it’s all OK again. It sounds simple.
“It was more than that. It was something else. I’m going to say something that may surprise you. It might have been David Luiz.”
