Manager opens up about Chelsea star’s ‘calming influence’
Belgium manager Roberto Martinez believes Chelsea attacker Eden Hazard has a huge passion for football
Roberto Martinez has described Chelsea star Eden Hazard as a calming influence in the dressing room.
The Blues forward is part of Martinez’s Belgium squad as the Red Devils for their friendlies against Mexico and Japan over the next week.
Belgium have already secured their place in next summer’s World Cup in Russia as Hazard looks to leave his mark on the major tournament.
The 26-year-old broke his ankle on international duty at the end of the 2016-17 season after Hazard helped Chelsea to win the Premier League title in their first campaign under Antonio Conte.
Hazard scored 16 times in 36 games in the Premier League last term to produce career-high figures following his move to the west London club from Lille in 2012.
The attacker has played under ambitious and often controversial managers throughout his Chelsea career, including Rafael Benitez, Jose Mourinho and Antionio Conte.
But his Belgium head coach Martinez revealed that Hazard is a positive influence in the dressing room, which will be of interest to Chelsea fans given David Luiz’s recent fallout with Conte.
“There are many types of leader,” Martinez told ESPN.
“Some are more vocal, others are less vocal and they lead by example and Eden is that way; he’s such a calm influence, but he’s someone who has got an incredible passion for the game.”
Hazard has won two Premier League titles, the League Cup and the Europa League since his move to Chelsea from Lille in 2012.
