Rio Ferdinand: 26-year-old the reason Chelsea win trophies
Man United legend Rio Ferdinand emphasises Eden Hazard's importance to Chelsea
Rio Ferdinand has underlined Eden Hazard’s importance to Chelsea.
The Belgium international broke the deadlock in the west London side’s 4-0 win over Qarabag mid-week to help Chelsea secure their place in the last 16.
Hazard scored two goals and made an assist in the Blues’ 4-0 resounding win against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns in their last Premier League outing.
The 26-year-old has rediscovered his top form despite starting the season on the sidelines following a broken ankle on international duty at the end of the 2016-17 campaign.
Hazard has scored 30 goals in Chelsea’s title-winning campaigns under Jose Mourinho and then Antonio Conte to establish himself as one of the Premier League’s best players.
He was even named the PFA Premier League player of the year in 2015 following a return of 14 goals in 38 games in 2014-15.
Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand believes Hazard will be crucial to Chelsea’s hopes of winning the Champions League for the first time since 2012.
“He’s definitely world class,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.
“He’s the reason that Chelsea were winning the league. If they’re going to go any deeper in this competition [the Champions League], he’s going to have to play a huge role and do what he did [against Qarabag].”
Hazard has won two Premier League titles, the Europa League and the League Cup since his move to Chelsea from Ligue 1 side Lille in the 2012 summer transfer window.
The Belgian forward is still waiting to get his hands on the Champions League for the first time in his career.
