Paul Merson: Chelsea only have one striker, Michy Batshuayi isn’t good enough
The Arsenal legend doesn't rate Michy Batshuayi as a genuine contenders to start for Chelsea
Paul Merson has warned Antonio Conte that he effectively has one striker in Alvaro Morata, discounting Michy Batshuayi as a genuine option for title contenders Chelsea.
The Belgian forward has found his first-team opportunities limited so far this season despite Diego Costa completing a return to La Liga giants Atletico Madrid.
Chelsea signed Morata in a £58m deal from La Liga giants Real Madrid to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new season.
Morata has already scored seven goals in 10 appearances in the Premier League this team, effortlessly making the transition to the English top flight.
Batshuayi has been limited to two starts in the Premier League and five appearances from the bench so far.
The Belgian has left his mark in the Champions League with two goals in three appearances, including a 90th-minute winner at Atletico Madrid.
He has also netted three times in two appearances in the League Cup, but Batshuayi remains behind Morata in the pecking order.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson believes Batshuayi isn’t good enough to command a starting spot as things stand for the title holders.
“They’ve got one centre-forward – no offence to Batshuayi,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“He is a player who will get better. He is a great impact player. That’s enough for him at the moment.
“He is a kid still. He is still learning from some great players. He ain’t going to go to another top team and play.”
