Nemanja Matic is hoping for a warm reception from Chelsea fans when he returns to Stamford Bridge for the first time as a Manchester United player on Sunday.

The 29-year-old signed for Chelsea’s Premier League rivals back in the summer transfer window after Antonio Conte deemed the Serbia international to be surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge.

The move surprised some, with Matic having played a key role in helping to inspire Chelsea to the title in Conte’s first campaign at the club last term.

Matic has slotted straight into first team affairs at Manchester United and has started each of their first 10 games in the Premier League this season.

The Serbian will be expecting to start once again when the Red Devils take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

And Matic is hoping for a positive reception from Chelsea’s supporters once again when he heads back to the club for the first time since his summer exit.

Matic is quoted as saying by Metro: “I feel when I played there, I showed them my quality.

“We won the title twice and also two cups, so I don’t have to prove to them anything. I just have to prove something to my new club. I don’t know [what reception I’ll get]. When I played there I always gave 100 per cent.

“I’m sure they respect that but if not I don’t really care.”

Chelsea head into Sunday’s game looking to get back to winning ways in the top flight after the disappointment of their 3-0 loss to Roma in the Champions League in midweek.

The Blues are currently fourth and nine points behind leaders Manchester City.
