Chelsea warned Man United decision was a big mistake
Paul Merson admits he was shocked to see Chelsea sell Nemanja Matic to Manchester United in the summer
Paul Merson has told Chelsea that deciding to sell Nemanja Matic to Manchester United in the summer transfer window was a bad decision.
Antonio Conte deemed the Serbian midfielder to be surplus to requirements at Stamford Bridge in the summer and approved his sale to the Red Devils.
The move came despite Matic having played a key role in helping Chelsea to win the title under Conte last season, and it came as a surprise to many.
Matic has slotted straight into the first team at Manchester United and has been a top performer in midfield for Jose Mourinho’s men.
However, we was unable to prevent Manchester United from slipping to a 1-0 loss to Chelsea in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
Former Arsenal star Merson admits he cannot believe that Chelsea opted to let one of their key players leave the club and sign for a direct title rival.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Merson said: “He [Mourinho] couldn’t believe his luck. Mourinho must have thought it was a wind-up.
“He is one of the best defensive midfielders in Europe. Chelsea won the league last year on the back of Kante and Matic. Chelsea are all over the place without Kante and Matic.”
Matic will be expecting to feature for Manchester United when the Red Devils return to Premier League action after the international break with a home clash against Newcastle United at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils are currently second in the table and eight points behind leaders Manchester City after 11 games of the new campaign.
