Neville lashes out at Chelsea after Man United transfer
Phil Neville criticises Chelsea for selling Nemanja Matic to Manchester United in the summer
Phil Neville has criticised Chelsea for selling Nemanja Matic to Manchester United in the wake of the Blues’ 3-0 loss to Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
The Blues were thoroughly outplayed in the Italian capital as Antonio Conte’s men suffered their first defeat of the season in the Champions League.
Chelsea made the surprising decision to let Matic leave Stamford Bridge to sign for Manchester United in the summer transfer window, despite the Serbian midfielder having played a key role in the Blues winning the title last season.
Matic has been a regular fixture in the first team at Manchester United since his move to the Old Trafford outfit from Chelsea.
The Blues, meanwhile, have struggled for consistent form this season, especially during N’Golo Kante’s lay-off with a hamstring injury.
And former Manchester United defender Neville cannot believe that the Blues agreed to sell Matic to their Premier League rivals in the summer.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 live on Tuesday night, Neville said: “What’s gone wrong for Chelsea? One word: Matic.
“It’s as simple as that. The minute they sold Nemanja Matic was a mistake.
“When you had Matic sat in front of you, alongside Kante, there was protection.
“Whoever made that decision needs sacking. That is one of the poorest decisions I have ever seen in the Premier League.”
Chelsea will now look to dust themselves down as they prepare for their crunch clash against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon as they bid to get back to winning ways.
