Paul Merson explains why he is such a keen admirer of Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek
Paul Merson has revealed that he is a keen admirer of Ruben Loftus-Cheek after he was sent out on loan to Crystal Palace from Chelsea.
The 21-year-old midfielder opted to leave Stamford Bridge in search of regular first-team football after struggling to hold down a regular spot in the west London side’s first team.
Loftus-Cheek played for he full 90 minutes as England played out a goalless draw with Germany in Friday’s international friendly clash at Wembley.
The midfielder will be hoping to prove to his parent club that he is capable of cutting it on a regular basis in the Premier League during his time at Crystal Palace.
And former Arsenal star Merson has revealed why he is such a big fan of the Chelsea youngster.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Merson said: “I’m pleased for him [Loftus-Cheek].
“I like him, I am a big fan of his. I thought fair play for him to go to [Crystal] Palace and I am pleased he got in the [England] team.
“He is a good player, good physique, gets around the pitch. It will be interesting, but I hope he does well as I do like him.
Chelsea return to Premier League action next weekend when they take on West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.
The Blues head into the game looking to build on their impressive 1-0 win over Manchester United last weekend, when Alvaro Morata netted the winner in the second half at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea are currently fourth and nine points behind leaders Manchester City after 11 games of the new Premier League season.
