Eden Hazard admits that he “felt bad” for Jose Mourinho during Chelsea’s dramatic slump in form in the 2015-16 season before the Portuguese coach was sacked by the Blues.

Mourinho parted company with the west London side in December 2015 after a disastrous start to the new campaign left the west London side closer to the relegation zone than the top of the Premier League table.

Hazard and his Chelsea team-mates struggled to produce consistent performances after having won the Premier League title in style in the 2014-15 campaign.

The Belgian playmaker, like most of his team-mates, struggled to recreate the form of the season before as the Blues ended up finishing 10th in the table.

And the 26-year-old former Lille star admits that he still doesn’t know what happened that season.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Hazard said: “I don’t know why [it happened]. I think every player – maybe managers and staff – we have a responsibility in this bad period.

“As a player I try to forget, I live in the present. It was a bad year for us with Jose, I was feeling bad for him but football sometimes is like this.

“You need to keep playing and smiling and then the year after we won again.”

Chelsea are aiming to defend their Premier League title this season after the Blues won the trophy in Antonio Conte’s first campaign in charge at the club last season.

The west London side return to Premier League action after the international break when they take on West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns on Saturday 18 November.
