Jurgen Klopp told Virgil van Dijk looks like ‘typical’ Liverpool FC defender
Virgil van Dijk looks like a trademark Liverpool FC defender, according to ex-Middlesbrough star Jan Aage Fjortoft
Jan Aage Fjortoft has joked that Virgil van Dijk looks like a “typical Liverpool FC defender” after his poor performance in Southampton’s 2-0 loss at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
The Netherlands international was linked with a move to Liverpool FC throughout the summer transfer window but a deal failed to materialise before deadline day.
Indeed, Liverpool FC were forced to issue a statement apologising to the Saints over their pursuit of the former Celtic defender after Southampton threatened to report their Premier League rivals for an alleged tapping up.
Van Dijk even handed in a transfer request but Southampton refused to budge and Liverpool FC started the season with Dejan Lovren, Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan as their recognised centre-halves.
Liverpool FC have the second worst defence in the Premier League after conceding 17 times in 11 games but managed to keep a clean sheet in a 3-0 win against the Saints.
Mohamed Salah broke the deadlock with a curled finish before Philippe Coutinho’s pass caught out Van Dijk and allowed Salah to double his tally.
Bundesliga expert and former Premier League football Fjortoft couldn’t resist a cheeky tweet commenting on Van Dijk’s performance.
Fjortoft wrote on Twitter: “Van Dijk looks like a typical Liverpool-defender on that second goal….out of position.”
Liverpool FC are in fifth place in the Premier League but a point adrift of third-placed Tottenham.
