Frank Lampard reacts to Willian’s ‘magical’ goal in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw at Liverpool
The Chelsea legend praises Willian and Cesc Fabregas for their impact from the bench in a 1-1 draw at Liverpool
Frank Lampard described Willian’s equaliser as a piece of magic to rescue a 1-1 draw with Liverpool FC at Anfield on Saturday evening.
The defending Premier League champions travelled to Anfield looking to extend their winning run to six games in all competitions following an impressive October for Antonio Conte’s side.
However, former Blues winger Mohamed Salah broke the deadlock midway through the first half when Tiemoue Bakayoko failed to clear the ball and the African forward scored his 10th Premier League goal of the season.
The African star placed a precise finish past Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to leave Chelsea facing a fourth Premier League defeat in their opening 13 games.
However, substitute Willian levelled with five minutes remaining when he scored with a lofted shot that caught out Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet.
Former Chelsea midfielder Lampard lavished praise on Willian and his fellow substitute Cesc Fabregas for their impact from the bench in the closing moments at Anfield.
“It was crying out for the change after Chelsea went 1-0 down,” Lampard told BT Sport.
“They weren’t getting enough possession and Cesc Fabregas was the right choice. Willian gave them a little bit of magic.
“I think it was a cross for the goal but it doesn’t matter for Chelsea because they deserved to get back into the game with their last 20 minutes.”
Chelsea are in third place and eight points behind current leaders Manchester City, who are in action on Sunday.
The Blues are looking to win back-to-back Premier League titles after finishing seven points clear of their closest rivals Tottenham Hotspur last term.
