Greame Le Saux reacts to Chelsea signing’s performance at Liverpool FC
The Chelsea legend singles out Danny Drinkwater for praise after his performance at Liverpool FC
Graeme Le Saux heaped praise on Chelsea signing Danny Drinkwater following his solid performance in a 1-1 draw at Liverpool FC on Saturday evening.
Blues manager Antonio Conte made the controversial decision to start Drinkwater ahead of Cesc Fabregas for the trip to Anfield as the defending champions looked to end a three-game losing run against Liverpool FC.
Chelsea signed Drinkwater in a £40m deal from Leicester City in the summer transfer window and the England international was reunited with his former Foxes team-mate Kante in the middle of the park.
Liverpool FC broke the deadlock in the second half when ex-Chelsea forward Mohamed Salah capitalised on Tiemoue Bakayoko’s mistake to score his tenth Premier League goal of the season.
Drinkwater produced a brilliant pass to tee up Eden Hazard to equalise but the Belgian forward fluffed his lines.
The summer signing was taken off in the 73rd minute as Conte looked to ditch his cautious approach in search of an equaliser.
And substitute Willian scored with five minutes remaining to rescue a point for the title holders and end their winless run against Liverpool.
Former Chelsea defender Le Saux heaped praise on Drinkwater for his performance at Liverpool on a rare start under Conte.
Asked to rate Drinkwater’s display, Le Saux told NBC:
“He was good. He got forward well. He understood the game plan. He looked sharp. It was a good 73 minutes for him.”
