Michael Owen sends warning to Liverpool ahead of Chelsea clash
The Liverpool FC legend sends warning to Jurgen Klopp and his players ahead of Chelsea clash
Michael Owen has warned Jurgen Klopp that Liverpool can’t afford to fall any further off the pace ahead of the visit of Chelsea on Saturday.
The Reds have been in impressive form over the past month or so following victories over Huddersfield Town, West Ham United and Southampton.
For all the concerns about Klopp’s defence, Liverpool have only conceded one goal in their last three Premier League games.
The Merseyside outfit unravelled at Sevilla on Tuesday night after squandered a 3-0 lead to draw 3-3 with the Spanish side in the Champions League.
The Reds are looking to challenge for the title for the first time under Klopp this term but have a 12-point deficit to recover on Manchester City.
Former Liverpool striker Owen warned Klopp and his Reds team that they can’t afford to drop points at home to the title holders this weekend.
“Confidence and momentum. They are huge words, especially playing in the big games,” Owen told BT Sport.
“Liverpool can’t afford to slip any further away from the pace. But they’re at home. I see one way of playing for Liverpool – that’s attacking, creativity and energy. They can’t sit back.”
Liverpool finished in fourth place in the Premier League table last season to secure a return to the Champions League following a two-season absence.
The Reds collected four points against Antonio Conte’s Chelsea team last term following a 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge and a 1-1 stalemate at Anfield.
Liverpool have never won the Premier League title.
