Paul Merson states his prediction for Liverpool FC v Chelsea
The Arsenal legend is backing Liverpool to hold Chelsea to a 1-1 draw at Anfield on Saturday evening
Paul Merson is tipping Liverpool to secure a 1-1 draw with defending champions Chelsea at Anfield on Saturday evening.
The Reds squandered a 3-0 half-time lead to draw 3-3 with La Liga giants Sevilla in their penultimate Champions League group stage in Spain on Tuesday night.
Liverpool have won their last three Premier League games thanks to commanding victories over Huddersfield Town, West Ham United and Southmapton.
While the Merseyside outfit have conceded 17 times in 12 games in the Premier League, Liverpool have kept five clean sheets in six top-flight fixtures at Anfield this term.
Chelsea have won four Premier League games on the spin to hoist themselves up to third place in the Premier League table.
The title holders managed to secure a point in a 1-1 draw with Jurgen Klopp’s side at Anfield back in February following a 2-1 loss to Liverpool at Stamford Bridge last season.
Former Arsenal midfielder Merson is backing Liverpool to hold Chelsea to a draw despite conceding that the Blues are in superior form.
“If both teams play to the best of their ability, Chelsea will win,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“They have better players: better defenders, and there’s not much in it attacking-wise. And Liverpool don’t have a Cesc Fabregas to properly hurt you.
“I have an inkling this will be a draw at Anfield, however, and that does neither side any favours.”
Liverpool FC finished in fourth place in the Premier League table to secure a return to the Champions League.
Chelsea won the title with two games to spare last season as Antonio Conte lifted the Premier League title for the first time.
