Steven Gerrard believes Roberto Firmino has all the qualities required to thrive as a centre-forward in the Liverpool FC team.

The Brazil international failed to get on the score sheet in Liverpool’s 4-1 win at West Ham United in the Premier League at the London Stadium on Saturday evening.

Firmino has scored three goals and has made two assists in 11 appearances in the Premier League this season to make a solid if unspectacular start to the campaign.

Jurgen Klopp has tended to utilise Firmino in a false number nine role since taking over the reins of the Merseyside outfit from Brendan Rodgers in October 2015.

Firmino has netted 30 times in 106 appearances in all competitions to become a fans’ favourite during his three seasons at Anfield.

Klopp has been urged to sign an out-and-out centre-forward to bolster his attacking options despite Firmino’s relative success.

Former Liverpool captain Gerrard believes Firmino has the attributes to score lots of goals in a centre-forward role.

“He sets the press for Liverpool. He works his socks off,” Gerrard told BT Sport.

“He has a fantastic first touch, he makes things happen, he’s strong and he’s hard to play against.

“It’s everything you want from a centre-forward.”

Rodgers signed Firmino in a £29m deal from Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim in the 2015 summer transfer window.

The Brazilian forward finished with double figures in the Premier League in his first two seasons in the English top flight.
