Naby Keita: My father used to tell me about Liverpool FC legend
The incoming Liverpool FC signing reveals his father's appreciation for the club's ex-captain Steven Gerrard
Naby Keita has revealed that his father used to tell him about Liverpool and their talismanic captain Steven Gerrard.
Liverpool made a number of attempts to sigh the Guinea international in the summer transfer window but RB Leipzig refused to sell despite the Reds making a series of club-record offers.
Ultimately the Merseyside outfit had to settle for a £48m agreement to sign the versatile midfielder at the end of the 2017-18 season when his contract release clause kicks in.
The 22-year-old has established a reputation as one of the Bundesliga’s most-exciting talents after Keita scored eight goals and made nine assists in the German top flight last term.
RB Leipzig are set to make a substantial profit on the box-to-box midfielder after the Bundesliga runners-up signed Keita in a £12.75m deal in the 2016 summer transfer window.
The incoming Liverpool signing has revealed that his link to the Red goes back to his childhood when his father used to tell him about the club’s talismanic skipper, Gerrard.
“My father is a huge fan!,” Keita told Goal. “As far back as I can remember, he has been talking about them. Before I even knew what Liverpool was as a kid, he was mad about them.
“Of course, when he found out about their interest and when the deal for next season was done, he was delighted. He wanted to speak about Istanbul, Steven Gerrard and every other big game or player of the club.”
Liverpool signed AS Roma winger Mohamed Salah, Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Hull City defender Andy Robertson and Chelsea teenager Dominic Solanke in the summer transfer window.
The Merseyside outfit are in fifth place in the Premier League table.
