Joe Gomez reveals Jurgen Klopp’s role in Liverpool FC comeback
The Liverpool FC defender heaps praise on Jurgen Klopp for helping his rehabilitation from a knee problem back into the national team
Joe Gomez has thanked Jurgen Klopp for placing his faith in the Liverpool FC defender.
The 20-year-old made a bright start to his Liverpool FC career after Brendan Rodgers signed the England Under-21 international in a £5m deal from Charlton Athletic.
However, Gomez suffered a season-ending knee injury in October 2015 days after Liverpool appointed Jurgen Klopp as Rodgers’ successor at Anfield.
The Reds boss had to wait until the start of the 2017-18 season to get to see Gomez in a competitive match for the first time as the full-back helped Liverpool FC ease to a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace.
Gomez’s performances for his club earned him a call up to the England team for the first time and he made his debut as a substitute in a goalless draw with Germany.
The Liverpool full-back won man of the match for his performance in the Reds’ goalless draw with Brazil at Wembley after nullifying Neymar.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live about his England performance, Gomez paid tribute to Liverpool manager Klopp:
“Getting this opportunity wouldn’t come without getting minutes for my club. That’s something I’m thankful for.
“He’s been great with me this season. He’s bedded me back in after last season. He’s given me great opportunities this season. He’s taught me a lot and given me guidance.
“Opportunities like this – I have to be thankful to him for giving me chances at the club.”
Gomes has made one assist in eight appearances in the Premier League this season.
