Rio Ferdinand defends Alberto Moreno after Liverpool FC collapse at Sevilla
The Man United legend looks to defend Liverpool FC defender Alberto Moreno after his horror show at Sevilla
Rio Ferdinand has attempted to defend Alberto Moreno following his poor performance in Liverpool FC’s 3-3 draw at Sevilla on Tuesday night.
The Reds were leading 3-0 at half-time in their penultimate Champions League group-stage clash following two goals from Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane’s header.
However, Liverpool FC were pegged back in the second half as Moreno made two mistakes to allow Sevilla to reduce the visitors’ lead to one goal with 25 minutes to go.
The Spanish side equalised in added time to make Liverpool FC wait until their final game against Spartak Moscow next month to secure a last-16 spot.
Moreno was substituted midway through the second half following his disastrous performance on his first return to his former club since his £12m move in the 2014 summer transfer window.
Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand suggested that Moreno was trying too hard to impress against Sevilla.
“The one thing I’d say about Moreno is he has gone back to his old club and that can be difficult for [even] the biggest players on the planet,” Ferdinand told BT Sport. “It brings an expectation.
“You’ve got to show why you were so good to get the move to Liverpool FC. That can bring a pressure itself.
“I’m trying to make excuses for the young boy but he has been susceptible to mistakes for the last couple of seasons.”
Moreno has history when it comes to poor performances against Sevilla in European games.
The much-maligned Liverpool FC left-back struggled in their 3-1 loss to the La Liga outfit in the Europa League final in Basel in 2015.
Liverpool FC will return to Premier League action with a clash against Premier League champions Chelsea this weekend.
