Frank Lampard: Why Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is under pressure at Liverpool FC
The Chelsea legend warns Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has put himself under pressure at Liverpool FC
Frank Lampard believes Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has put himself under pressure at Liverpool after telling Jurgen Klopp where he wants to play.
The Reds signed the England international in a £40m deal from Arsenal on transfer deadline day to improve their squad ahead of a return to the Champions League.
Oxlade-Chamberlain moved to Liverpool ahead of interest from defending Premier League champions Chelsea, while Arsenal wanted to offer the English midfielder a new contract.
The 24-year-old was made wait for his first start in a Liverpool shirt after he made a string of substitute appearances.
Oxlade-Chamberlain made his full Liverpool debut in a 3-0 win against Maribor in the Champions League after he netted in Slovenia as a second-half substitute last month.
The Englishman marked his first Premier League start in a Liverpool shirt with a goal after Oxlade-Chamberlain netted the Merseyside outfit’s second goal in a 4-1 win at West Ham United on Saturday evening.
Former Chelsea midfielder Lampard warned Oxlade-Chamberlain that he is under pressure to perform at Liverpool.
“It’s a big call to go to a club and say: ‘this is where I want to play’ in a team that’s full of quality players in that area,” Lampard told BT Sport.
“He’s put himself under pressure. He’d do well to look at Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva at Manchester City – it’s not an easy transition.
“When you play wide, there are different responsibilities and you can afford to take more chances.”
Liverpool hoisted themselves up to fifth place in the Premier League table last term thanks to their 4-1 victory at West Ham.
The Reds signed four players in the summer transfer window.
