Steven Gerrard names Liverpool FC’s best defender
The Liverpool FC captain believes Dejan Lovren remains Jurgen Klopp's best centre-half

Steven Gerrard believes Dejan Lovren is still Liverpool FC’s best centre-half when the Croatian defender is fully fit.
The 28-year-old has endured a difficult start to the 2017-18 season so far as Liverpool FC continue to struggle defensively.
The Reds were heavily linked with a move to sign Southampton club captain Virgil van Dijk in the summer transfer window but couldn’t get a deal over the line.
Perhaps talk of the Netherlands international’s arrival affected Lovren’s confidence but the ex-Saints defender has struggled badly in the heart of Jurgen Klopp’s defence.
Lovren was substituted inside 32 minutes at Wembley last month after Liverpool FC conceded two goals as a result of the Croatian’s mistakes in a 4-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur.
Gerrard played alongside Lovren in the 2014-15 season after Brendan Rodgers signed the centre-half in a £20m deal from Southampton in the 2014 summer transfer window.
Former Liverpool FC captain Gerrard is adamant that Lovren remains the club’s best defender when fit despite his well-documented struggles.
“When he’s fully fit, Dejan Lovren is probably Liverpool’s first choice centre-back,” Gerrard told BT Sport. “It was a huge blow for Liverpool [for him to miss out against Chelsea].”
Of course, former Schalke 04 defender Joel Matip and England international Joe Gomez may have a thing or two to say about Lovren being Klopp’s best centre-half.
Van Dijk continues to be linked with Liverpool FC ahead of the January transfer window.
